Brief interduction about the Dazu Rock Carvings
The Dazu Rock Carvings is located in Chongqing province, a lot of Chongqing district could see the Dazu Rock Carvings, etc. Dazu area, Tongnan County, Tongliang County and Bishan County. And the Dazu Rock Carvings is the name for all of the cliff sculptures in Dazu area.
The Dazu Rock Carving group has more than 70 Stone Carvings, there are more than 100,000 human body sculptures.
Evaluation of the Dazu Rock Carvings
The Dazu Rock Carvings is not only to have Grand scale, exquisite Carving art, rich content and gorgeous national features, but also has very high historical, scientific and artistic value. It has the pivotal position in the ancient grotto art of Chinese history, it has been named the magical pearl of oriental art.
The Baoding Stone Carving
The Baoding mountain is located in the northeast of Longgang street which belongs Dazu area, and the altitude of this mountain is 527.83 meters. The cliff sculptures of Baoding mountain has made in the Southern Song Dynasty, there are a lot of Buddhist sculptures are around the each side of the cliff in 2.5 kilometers, including the Da Fowan sculpture and the Xiao Fowan sculpture.
To attach most importance to the Da fowan, and the Xiao Fowan is going to be the second. They all distribute in the east, south and north side. The huge sculpture of here has more than 360 in all.
There is a Shengshou temple in the Da Fowan area, this temple has been built in the Southern Song Dynasty. And the Da Fowan is located in a valley with “ U “ shape which situate under the Shengshou temple. The Cliff face has 500 meters, and 8 to 25 meters high.
There has a Ritual Site Of Buffaloes in the Baoding Stone Carving. The niche is 570cm high and 2910cm wide. The groups of carvings, comparing the Buffalo to man’s heart, and the herdsman to the person who practices Buddhism, expound the gradual process of taming mental activities of Buddhists. With the group of “ Tameless Buffalo” at the beginning, the “Herdsman and Buffalo” in Full Enlightenment” at the end on a 30 meter-long surface of rock, there are ten groups of carvings in all, being permeated with strong local flavor.
