The population of Koreans in China include millions of descendants of Korean immigrants with citizenship of the People's Republic of China, as well as smaller groups of South and North Korean expatriates, with a total of roughly 2.3 million people as of 2009, making it the largest ethnic Korean population living outside the Korean Peninsula. The current Korean population in China is mainly descended from migrants who came between 1860 and 1945. In the 1860s, a series of natural disasters struck Korea, leading to disastrous famines. Along with the Qing dynasty's loosening of border controls and acceptance of external migration into Northeast China, this pushed many Koreans to migrate. By 1894, an estimated 34,000 Koreans lived in China, with numbers increasing to 109,500 in 1910.
Most ethnic Koreans in China speak Mandarin Chinese and many also speak fluent Korean as their mother tongue. Most Chinese of Korean descent have ancestral roots and family ties in the Hamgyong region of North Korea, and speak the Hamgy?ng dialect of Korean according to North Korean conventions. However, since South Korea has been more prolific in exporting its entertainment culture, more Korean Chinese broadcasters have been using Seoul dialect. The so-called Korean wave (Hallyu) has also influenced fashion styles and increased the popularity of plastic surgery. Most of the ethnic Koreans in China are Buddhists, but there is also a large proportion following Christianity, and using Korean language to do the mass. Swing playing is one of the favorite activities for women of Korean ethnic group in China.
Slightly different from those swing playing we normally play, with a distant history, the activity is usually held in holidays, or even in the way of a contest in Korean Ethnic groups. During the festivals, the girls wear flamboyant multicolor skirts and content with each other around the swing. In a contest, a string of golden copper bells is tied with a colored ribbon hung over the swing, and the competitors shall try to jingle the bell as much as possible when swinging to win out.
The Korean people are good at singing and dancing. The happy dancing of peasants is one of the entertainment activities of the Korean people with ethnic feature. The often dance the elephant hat dance to the accompaniment of the long drum in their leisure time or in occasions for merriment and holidays. The long ribbon attached to their elephant hat resembles the profile of the Changbai Mountain, together with the long drum and the elephant hat form a symbolic design, representing the festival atmosphere and ethnic features. The characteristics of songs and dances—long drum dance, is a kind of dance with fans in hands and the song“Alilang”.
