Wu River is also known as Wu Jiang shuixi in China. It’s a huge river system. The most important course of Wu River is tributary of River Yangtze and is known as Chang Jiang which is locates in south central part of China. In hills of western portion of Guizhou province, it rises near Weining which is very close of Yunnan province borders.

From here the major river course moves towards east via narrow gorges that are amid the steep cliffs. At Sinan, Wu River turns north and enters the municipality of Chingqing, where it flows to join Yangtze River at Fuling. The names of upstream parts of this river are known as Yachi and Sacha rivers in succession. Wu River from headwaters possesses a length of nearly seven hundred miles to Fuling. The entire river system of Wu River is having fifteen main tributaries that include Furong, Liuchong, Xiang, Tangyan, Maotiao, Hongdu and Qingshui Rivers.

Along most tributaries of Wu River, hydro electric power stations and dams are constructed. The most important project is Wujiangdu power station that generates hydroelectric power. It is located near Wujiang town in northern part of Guiyang. It was constructed in 1983 in conjunction with a huge dam that is five hundred thirty five feet high.

The drainage basin of Wu river system is having thirty one thousand miles area. It includes a major portion of Guizhou province. It is an area of rocky terrain that has ethnically diverse inhabitants. The use of Wu river system was little till mid twentieth century to lower the isolation of region. The reason behind is that rapids as well as submerged rocks put a stop to navigation in all aspects but a certain small stretches. From fifties, blasting along with dredging has led way to open over three hundred miles of this lengthy river and upstream areas to excellent motorized boats.

Wu River is largest southern Yangtze River tributary. Approximately the length is one thousand one hundred fifty kilometres that flows in ethnically diverse mountainous and isolated Guizhou province. It flows through various districts in Guizhou such as Liupanshui, Qiannan, Anshun, Zunyi and Guiyang. All nine areas of Guizhou province are having a minimum fractional drainage to river. At Fuling, it empties in Wu Gorge, specifically at Three Gorges of Yangtze. A portion of lower river course is much flooded by Three Gorges Dam reservoir. Wu Gorge is known by several names like Iron Coffin Gorge, Golden helmet and Silver Armour Gorge, etc.

Wu River system is extensively developed to generate hydroelectric power. As per 2010mreports, dams in Wu River are able to produce power of eight thousand five hundred megawatts. The largest dame is Goupitan Dam which is having dimension of seven hundred sixty one feet. These dams also offer flood control as well as hydraulic assistance for operations of irrigation.

There are several bridges over Wu River such as Zunyi Bridge, Fuling Arch bridge, Jiangjiehe Bridge, Fuling Wu River Bridge, Liuguanghe Bridge, and Wu River Shandu Bridge.
