If there’s one form of cultural entertainment that you must sink yourself in when in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, it’s Karaoke. Although Japanese in its origins, it’s a massively popular social activity in most of East and Southeast Asia. There’s nothing more effective in breaking down those walls between colleagues friends, and families than belting out song after song with all your heart. It’s soul-bearing, wholesome (alcohol is optional), relatively inexpensive, and strangely addictive.

Types of Karaoke Places
Here’s one thing to know about karaoke in Hong Kong and Shenzhen if you’re unfamiliar with the scene. There are three types of karaoke places. The family-friendly specialist chain features private rooms that are soundproofed, and often have a buffet or a la carte menu so you can have your meals there. Don’t expect the food to be great, but decent. The sound system and acoustics are usually good, and the song choices are extensive. Expect clientele ranging from groups of students to middle-aged friends.
The bars often feature karaoke as one of their socializing options. Some have ‘public’ karaoke nights when you can serenade or traumatize the whole bar, while some have private rooms too. For those who want their karaoke nights with some rounds of pool and probably a better drinks option, the bars make for a good option.
The third type, the infamous clubs with hostesses, is popular amongst businessmen who use these places to entertain clients, colleagues. Unfortunately, women are part of the ‘entertainment,’ and you may find this highly uncomfortable as they do offer sexual services. If you’re suggesting a place, be sure that you don’t unwittingly choose one of these clubs if you don’t have the intention of visiting.
How to enjoy a good karaoke session

When it comes to having fun at karaoke, treat it like you would a night out clubbing. You only have fun when you’re able to let loose and let go of your self-consciousness really. Some veterans practice singing at home so that they can impress their karaoke mates on their days out. If you’re shy, start your session singing in a group, then in a duet, and by the time the alcohol takes effect, you’re ready for your time in the spotlight. Wondering where you can unleash the songbird or rockstar within? Look out for these popular places and start practicing in your shower today.
